Kiln Photo offers practical, hands-on tutorials and workshops exploring photography from camera skills through to darkroom practice, digital workflow, and final print presentation.

 

Whether you’re just starting out or developing an existing practice, the studio provides a space to learn, experiment, and refine your photographic craft.

CAMERA SKILLS

Learn how to take control of your camera and understand what the different functions and settings do.

 

Tutorials and workshops cover both digital and analogue cameras, including classic and large format cameras such as 4×5 and 8×10. If you don’t have a camera of your own, loan cameras are available to experiment with in the studio or out on location.

BLACK & WHITE ANALOGUE PHOTOGRAPHY

Learn how to develop your own black and white film and create prints from your negatives in the darkroom.
 

Workshops introduce traditional printing techniques along with a deeper understanding of the materials and processes involved in analogue photography.

COLOUR FILM PROCESSING & PRINTING

Explore the process of working with colour film, from development through to printing.
 

Tutorials and workshops introduce the principles of colour balance, filtration, and exposure when printing in the colour darkroom.

DIGITAL WORKFLOW

Learn how to refine and enhance your images using Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom.
 

You’ll also explore preparing images for print and producing high-quality results using our Epson inkjet printers, while understanding how different papers affect the final image.

ALTERNATIVE & CAMERALESS

Explore creative techniques that don’t require a camera.
 

Workshops include cyanotype and salt printing, as well as experimental approaches such as photograms and scannography.

STUDIO PRACTICE

Learn how to work with studio lighting equipment to create portraits, still life, and object photography.
 
Tutorials and workshops focus on understanding light, shape, and control within a studio environment.

MOUNTING, FRAMING & PRESENTATION

Learn how to cut custom mounts and prepare prints for framing or exhibition.

Tutorials also cover alternative presentation methods including floating mounts, foam board mounting, and portfolio preparation.
